Neal Stoughton

Professor Stoughton is an authority on corporate finance, strategic financial management and pension fund management from the corporate point of view.  He is best known for his pathbreaking work on the subject of compensation contracts in funds management.  More recently he has published a paper on the structure of the investment management industry. His latest work looks at strategies of open end mutual funds in pricing their private equity holdings.


Dr. Stoughton has particular expertise in risk management, mergers and acquisitions, capital structure, managerial compensation, transfer pricing and optimal portfolio manager fee schedules. He is a consultant in the area of legal issues, banking, and economic valuation. He has taught courses in corporate finance, derivatives, investments, corporate valuation, and funds management.

Professor Stoughtons work has appeared in the top journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Business.  He served as Associate Editor of the Review of Financial Studies, the Review of Finance, Management Science and the International Review of Finance.  He has presented talks throughout the world and has been invited to give seminars in the top universities worldwide. 

Dr. Stoughton received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and his MS and PhD from Stanford University in Engineering-Economic Systems (now part of the Management Science Department). 

He has served on the faculties of UCLA, the University of California at Irvine, the University of California at Davis, the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, INSEAD, the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Donau Universität Krems and the Universität  Wien.  Prior to his appointment at the WU, he was the head of banking and finance at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia and the Macquarie Group Chair in Financial Services.  He was also instrumental in organizing the Financial Intermediation Research Society Conference held in Sydney Australia in June 2011.

Professor Stoughton has significant personal interests in the sport of bicycle racing where he has competed internationally and won significant events in his age category.
